Nestling below the parasol pines of the rugged Provencal Maures, and across the deep blue bay from the fabled fishing village of St. Tropez, Ste. Maxime exudes the ease of traditional Mediterranean living with the vibrancy of the modern Cote d’Azur. Its proximity to the international airports of Nice and Marseille makes it the perfect destination for those searching for sophistication and seclusion with accessibility.
By day, take in the yachts bobbing from the marina to Monaco and Cannes, sunbathe on the fine sandy beaches, enjoy a game of petanque or just sip your expresso with the locals watching the world go by. At night the medieval town bursts into life with its kaleidoscope of street stalls, concerts and performers; not to mention the selection of high quality restaurants serving freshly caught and harvested regional dishes as well as Italian, Indian, Vietnamese, North African and Spanish cuisine. The local pink rose wine is a perfect accompaniment to the summertime vibe that continues long into the night.
The town is designed to be explored on foot and most amenities are within a five minute stroll. Hiking round the Semaphore hill above the town is highly recommended for the breathtaking views in all directions, whilst horse riding, golf, cycling, canoeing, sailing, scuba-diving and all other water sports are easily found in the locality. There is also a museum of local history set in a medieval fort on the seafront and frequent art exhibitions, whilst the casino is always a popular diversion.
If you still require more stimulation perhaps you can find it a short 20 minute ferry ride away in St. Tropez, holiday home to the silver screen stars. Wander the winding streets of designer shops and mingle with the locals bargaining on the Place des Lices market then take a seat in the quayside cafes and try to spot the famous and infamous hopping on and off the gangways.
The rest of the Cote d’Azur is literally on your doorstep, with Nice approximately an hour away along the seaside Basse Corniche route that ducks in and out of the ancient rock revealing sandy nooks of beach for idyllic isolation, as well as the hubbub of the tourist towns and marinas of Cannes and Antibes. |
